Cy-Fair Houston Chamber to hold recycling fair March 26 and 27

HOUSTON, TX — February 17, 2011 Cy-Fair residents are invited to the first Cy-Fair Houston Green Fair, hosted by the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce as part of their mission to help the community go green.

The weekend of recycling is in conjunction with the Fourth Annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show. Recycling takes place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 26 and from 12 to 4 p.m. Sunday, March 27 at the Berry Center located at 8877 Barker Cypress, Cypress, TX 77433.

This is a great event for Cy-Fair said Mary Evans, president of the Cy-Fair Houston Chamber. We hope people will start gathering their recyclables.

The Chamber is partnering with the Fourth Annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show, NuValTech Recycling, The Shred Pro, Fred Haas Toyota Country and The Shred Guy to host the fair. Area residents will have the opportunity to bring plastic bottles, aluminum cans and electronics for recycling, as well as paper and other items for shredding. There is a $10 suggested donation fee per load.

Electronic recyclables include computers and computer parts, printers, mobile phones, copiers, fax machines, remote controls and telephone equipment.

This is a great time to pull out those old electronics you’ve wanted to get rid of for awhile Evans said. Sometimes these items are collected but not properly disposed. We are working with recycling partners who are doing everything the right way.

Evans said that any memory left on electronic devices will be completely wiped out through a process called data sanitization. Our recycling partner, NuValTech, offers a data sanitization process for systems they receive, and they issue a Certificate of Destruction to clients when the data sanitization process is complete.

Data sanitization is the process of completely and permanently removing or destroying data stored on a device, including PC hard drives, network hard drives and memory cards commonly found in personal computers, PDAs and smart phones. A device that has been sanitized no longer has reusable data on it. NuValTech uses a data sanitization process, also referred to as Data Wipes that meets the standard set out by the Department of Defense for data destruction. For more information on data sanitization, visit www.nuvaltech.com.

The Chamber also recently created a Sustainability Committee to research, advise, educate and encourage Cy-Fair businesses to become leaders in sustainable practices.

We want to educate businesses on best practices for initiating programs in their companies, and we want to involve the community and area students in learning and applying these principals where we live, she said.

Evans said that Cy-Fair businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the environment. They live and work in this community and their kids go to school here. They want to take care of the area, she said.

Our community is growing and it’s a good time to get businesses involved in environmental programs, she said. It’s just good for our future.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Fourth Annual Cy-Fair Home and Garden Show, also held on March 26 and 27.

We are proud to be a part of the inaugural Cy-Fair Green Fair said Tony Wood, president of Texwood Shows.

Sustainable building is part of our focus at this year’s show he added. We are offering a number of exhibitors featuring green products, from recycled countertops and alternative energy sources to efficient insulation and innovative skylights.
